My father--John Colin Cottingham (1910-1999)--worked for many years to develop a Cottingham Lineage Chart. After much travel and research, he traced back to the first Cottingham--George (1615-?)--who came to the New World from England as an indentured servant in 1635 on the ship, the Primrose.
There are many fascinating notations, such as the one for Charles Cottingham (1750-1817) who was in the South Carolina Militia at the fall of Charlestown in 1780. My great-grandfather-Col. James McCutchen(1830-1897) fought in the Civil War. He also researched his mother's lineage (McCutchen) back to 17th century Ireland.
My father was also the long-time historian of the "Cottingham Reunion", held every year in Little Rock, SC. An interesting picture, taken about 1898, was of the descendants of Andrew and Catherine Sinclair Cottingham . My great-grandfather, John Colen Cottingham, and his wife Mary Jane LeGette Cottingham, are pictured there.
I can't help but think how helpful Ancestry.com could have been to my father. Although he did use a computer in the final years of his research, he could have found such "jewels" of information on the internet today.
